Do I Have a Heel Spur?

The medical condition that is known as a heel spur typically develops from inflammation that happens to the plantar fascia. It is defined as a bony growth that forms on the heel, and can cause pain and discomfort. Some of the reasons why this condition may develop can include sudden weight gain, wearing shoes that do not have adequate cushioning, or existing conditions that may include flat feet. The symptoms that patients experience can consist of pain in the heel and surrounding areas, and the foot may feel stiff upon arising in the morning. Research has indicated that mild relief may be found when orthotics are worn in the shoes, as this may be helpful in reducing pressure on the heel. If you have developed a heel spur, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can offer you correct treatment options.

Heels Spurs

Heel spurs are formed by calcium deposits on the back of the foot where the heel is. This can also be caused by small fragments of bone breaking off one section of the foot, attaching onto the back of the foot. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

Treatments

There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain, there are several methods for healing. Medication, surgery, and herbal care are some options.

Many women enjoy wearing high heels, as wearing this type of shoe can often make the feet and legs look slender. If you choose to wear high heels, it is important to look for heels that are slightly wider, as this may be helpful in preventing unwanted foot conditions from developing. Patients may find it beneficial to wear cushions over their toes which can help to prevent corns from forming. Additionally, existing friction may be reduced when a lubricant or powder is applied to your foot or put inside the shoe. If you would like additional information about how to choose high heels that are right for you, it’s suggested that you consult with a podiatrist.

High heels have a history of causing foot and ankle problems. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact Dr. James Kutchback from James Kutchback, DPM, ABLES, CWS-P. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Effects of High Heels on the Feet

High heels are popular shoes among women because of their many styles and societal appeal.  Despite this, high heels can still cause many health problems if worn too frequently.

Which Parts of My Body Will Be Affected by High Heels?

  • Ankle Joints
  • Achilles Tendon – May shorten and stiffen with prolonged wear
  • Balls of the Feet
  • Knees – Heels cause the knees to bend constantly, creating stress on them
  • Back – They decrease the spine’s ability to absorb shock, which may lead to back pain.  The vertebrae of the lower back may compress.

What Kinds of Foot Problems Can Develop from Wearing High Heels?

  • Corns
  • Calluses
  • Hammertoe
  • Bunions
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Plantar Fasciitis

How Can I Still Wear High Heels and Maintain Foot Health?

If you want to wear high heeled shoes, make sure that you are not wearing them every day, as this will help prevent long term physical problems.  Try wearing thicker heels as opposed to stilettos to distribute weight more evenly across the feet.  Always make sure you are wearing the proper shoes for the right occasion, such as sneakers for exercising.  If you walk to work, try carrying your heels with you and changing into them once you arrive at work.  Adding inserts to your heels can help cushion your feet and absorb shock. Full foot inserts or metatarsal pads are available.

How to Treat Your Corns

The body’s natural response is to protect itself, which is why the skin may develop a hardened layer of skin in the form of a corn. Corns will typically develop due to an increased level of friction. While this protective layer may be to help the skin of the foot, it can also be very painful and sensitive. To help avoid this, it’s important to wear shoes that put little to no pressure on the feet. If you find your corn to be uncomfortable, some patients have said that soaking the feet in warm water, followed by filing the corn with a pumice stone, can be an effective way to alleviate the pain. If you would like more information on how to best treat your corn, it is recommended that you consult with a podiatrist for professional care and advice.

Corns can make walking very painful and should be treated immediately. If you have questions regarding your feet and ankles, contact Dr. James Kutchback of James Kutchback, DPM, ABLES, CWS-P. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Corns: What Are They? And How Do You Get Rid of Them?
Corns are thickened areas on the skin that can become painful. They are caused by excessive pressure and friction on the skin. Corns press into the deeper layers of the skin and are usually round in shape.

Ways to Prevent Corns
There are many ways to get rid of painful corns such as:

  • Wearing properly fitting shoes that have been measured by a professional
  • Wearing shoes that are not sharply pointed or have high heels
  • Wearing only shoes that offer support

Treating Corns

Although most corns slowly disappear when the friction or pressure stops, this isn’t always the case. Consult with your podiatrist to determine the best treatment option for your case of corns.

Blisters may be characterized as fluid-filled sacs that form due to friction between the foot and tightly worn socks or shoes. Some blisters may also form due to a burn or injury. To help prevent a blister from developing, it is recommended that your footwear is neither too big nor too small, as that may increase rubbing between your foot and shoe. For runners especially, it is important that you change your running shoes about every 6 months to ensure a proper fit. Some patients have found keeping their feet dry by using a foot powder has been effective in preventing blisters as well. For extra support, you may want to try doubling your socks, or taping areas that are more susceptible to getting blisters, such as the back of the heel or your toes. For more advice on the treatment and prevention of blisters it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist for professional care.

Blisters may appear as a single bubble or in a cluster. They can cause a lot of pain and may be filled with pus, blood, or watery serum. If your feet are hurting, contact Dr. James Kutchback of James Kutchback, DPM, ABLES, CWS-P. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

Symptoms

(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)

  • Bubble of skin filled with fluid
  • Redness
  • Moderate to severe pain
  • Itching

Prevention & Treatment

In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.
